Running Elephant or Senegalese Elephant was modelled by Barye in 1874/5 during the last years of his life. It was one of Barye's most popular models and one the last pieces he created before his death. In his own catalogue it was referenced B211. It is unknown how many examples were cast in his lifetime. In February 1876, the Barye estate organised his Atelier Sale at Hotel Drouot Auctioneers in Paris. The model of the Running Elephant was bought by the Barbedienne Foundry, who produced the work in three sizes. The present example was cast circa 1900.
